Scrap Busting

Want to reduce waste and be more sustainable in your sewing? Try scrap busting!

A great way to avoid waste and often a good opportunity to make unique little gifts. Word of warning these projects might make you wish you had more scraps.

In this post I've pulled out some of my favourite scrap busting sewing projects that use small and irregular pieces of fabric to make wonderful extra sewing projects.

Scrap busting will leave you feeling clutter and guilt free, plus give you more time and space to go hunting for more fabrics (eco or second hand of course).

Below are some of my favourite scrap busting project ideas with plenty more on my Scrap Busting Pinterest Board

1. Patchwork

Have you tried patchwork? It doesn't need to be complicated, you don't have to make a super king size quit. In fact micro patchwork can be so much fun and small squares can add up to big pieces very quickly.

Your patchwork could then become any number of new things, like a bag or a cushion, get pattern inspiration HERE

Patchwork also seems to me like the perfect excuse to use all your favourite little prints in one project.

If you'd like to have a go I made a freebie download to help you (just click the image below)

2. Mini bunting

Making bunting is a great way to use small/irregular pieces of scrap fabric and makes the cutest gift or decoration.

I have a FREE PDF template with 3 sizes that you can download now.

Just mix and match little triangles from your scrap stash and and string onto ribbon or twine.

Speaking of twine check out the next project idea and maybe you can string your bunting on scraps too...

3. Scrap busting baskets

Here's a great way to use up scrappy squares of fabric to make the cutest cube baskets. Quick and Easy sewing project and you don't need a pattern.

Check out this project HERE

4. Pyramid purse

This little project blew my mind the first time I made one and became so addictive. You only need 4 little squares of fabric and one side of a zip so it's a great scrap buster!

See my sewing tutorial HERE

The zip construction is so cool because you get to remove the pull and swap it out for a diffent colour.

    5. Book covers

One of my favourite super simple sewing projects is making note book covers and I'm thinking that this project would be the perfect use for your fabric scraps.

Maybe you have some bigger scraps or could patchwork some pieces together (as above) The sewing instructions below will tell you how to make a notebook cover in any shap or size so you could go as small as you like with this project.

You just need to get yourself a notebook, journal or diary and get sewing...

    6. Fabric twine and shoe laces

Even the tiniest off cuts can be used in a fun and creative way to avoid waste.

Fabric twine or shoe laces for example.

Once you've worked your way through your scrap stash and you get down to the smallest pieces you can still turn them into Stuffing!
